Details matter
This course may seem overwhelming when you start but it is really not that hard.

The tests for the course are reused every year so if at all possible find an upperclassmen and get copies of old tests to study off of.

Detlof is quite knowledgeable about the AVR, but handles questions better if they are asked in class. You can go see him in his office but he isn't usually very helpful.

Also this is a class that is hard to do well in if you do not complete the reading (or at least the majority). Assembly is so detail oriented that you need to retain many details in order to do well on labs and quiz/tests.

Herb Detloff seems like a horrible teacher at first. He gives so much homework that you can't really take the time to understand it. His tests are pretty hard, but you get to make an equation sheet, so by reviewing the topic to get the equations you study for the test pretty well.

The worst part of the class is the karaoke machine. You have to build a machine that takes microphone and cd input and has some filters and amps and stuff and drives a speaker. You will probably spend all your free time in lab at the end of the class and you will want to pull your hair out.

The upside however, is that if you try in the class you will have a very good understanding of the material. He is pretty good at answering questions and will explain things beyond the normal material if you ask. You'll hate him while you're taking the class but if you will get a great basis for the next few classes (if you're in electronics engineering).

It may seem like you are going to get a horrible grade in the class, but something magical happens at the end of the semester and you will get the grade you deserve.
