Reviews For Lynn Amis
HIST-1000
World Civilizations I
This was a class taken alongside with Honors Composition (ENGL 2160) with Matthew Marx as "Research in the Synergy of Thought and Spirit." Both classes are excellent and I highly recommend them. They're only available to honors students, but definitely make a great first year college experience.
Amis gives great lectures and is a knowledgeable and friendly guy. This course is REALLY work intensive - reading chapters for each class period, with an on-line quiz and an in-class quiz for each chapter. The online quizzes are straightforward, but the in-class quizzes are a huge pain in the ass. There's several projects outside of that, which are not as difficult as they are time-consuming.
Overall, loved the class, the professors, the students, and fully intend to take the second section of the course (world civ II and world lit), as well the trip to Europe.

World Civilizations II
Honors Synergy Course
Okay, this is a hard course. Now, don't get me wrong. It's not boring. Plus before class he almost always shows a funny clip from YouTube and the like...just before the daily quiz. Yes. We had quizzes almost every class time. In addition to the weekly Blackboard quiz. And they were short answers/map questions. Then on the tests we had short answers, maps, and essay questions. He knows his stuff, though, and class was interesting. We always felt free to ask questions, and he scales our points. For example, the first third of the class, the quizzes were worth, say, 10 points. Then the second third 20 pts, and the final third 30 pts. So by the end, when you've gotten the hang of it and are getting better at the quizzes, those ones count more. But in the meantime, you may wonder what you got yourself into. Don't worry. Hang in there, and it's all worth it. Especially if you can afford to go on the summer European Tour (the prereq are the three synergy classes). And yes, it's true, you write one paper, and make three copies, one for History, one for Philosophy, and one for English. So that part was awesome :) You really see the "synergy" between all three subjects, and that makes it all worthwhile.
